In this chapter, you will learn to execute your field study. Great planning and discipline will help you make the most of your time on the field. But the thrill of field work is also to be ready to be surprised and to improvise.

In this chapter we present basic observation techniques, and how to manage the data produced as a result.

Method: Interview

In this chapter you will learn how to plan and perform interviews. You will also learn how to train and improve your interviewing skills. It is a fundamental practice you will use a lot when performing field studies.

Method: Mapping

In this chapter we present the mapping techniques we recommend to use throughout the field study process. We use mapping a lot, as a way to collect data, describe and analyse operational scenarios, and as a support to design reflection.

The design-driven design research model combines data collection, design reflection and personal experience as the driving forces of field research.

Model: Operation-Architecture

The Operation-Architecture model is a co-evolution model for ship design processes. Its function is to generate and evaluate concepts that connect how a ship is used (operation) with the systems it is made of (architecture).

Case: Human-centred ship engine rooms

We documented the experience of ship crew working in the engine room in a field study and used the results to create new concepts for improved experiences.

Case: What happens when 30 design students spend 3 days on a ship to do 9 simultaneous field studies

Every year we send a large group of design students on a passenger ship for OICL´s 10 days intensive course on field studies in design processes. Here is a recap of the 2019 edition.
